Think About It
Play Activities is hosting the Carnival of Family Life this week, but it is another post there that caught my eye. Teaching young children how to think.
The post shares some tips on how to help young children think. Tips such as “Use questions like ‘How do you know?’ “. After reading this I had to stop and think myself. Is this really something parents need to be aware of and actively doing? I thought I would try to focus on how I interact with my preschooler and see. During 2 hours of playing I spontaniously asked him “Why?”, “How do you know?” and “What do you think?” at least a dozen times. It was not forced or something that I needed to work on. It’s just how I talk with my child.
I wonder if there really are parents out there that need tips on how to talk to their children. Or if there are children that need their parents to know how to “teach them to think”. Is this a big enough problem that it needs to be focused on? Perhaps an effect of children being taught by TV?
