Tell Me About Your Favorite Children’s Books!

Remember when I mentioned that November 12-18 is National Children’s Book Week? And remember how I mentioned that there would be a prize? Well here are the details!
Each day I’m going to write a post about a favorite children’s book that we love. It will be difficult narrowing them down to just one a day, but I’ll try. Hopefully it will be a new book you have not heard of, or one that you have not yet read with your kids. See, I want to inspire reading. Books are wonderful!
Comments are pretty great too! So I’m encouraging everyone to leave me lots of comments all week sharing your favorite children’s books. On the 19th I will post a huge list with everyone’s book suggestions. And I will announce the winner of a free book of their choosing. There is a catch, however, to the book. Rathern than buying and sending you the book, I will use one of my book credits at PaperBackSwap to have any one book sent to you.
If you are not familiar with PaperBackSwap let me wipe the look of shock off my face and explain. PBS is a free book trading community where you can send your old books to people who rally want them and get new books for yourself to enjoy. You simply join, list what books you have that you want to send off, and make a list of what books you want to read. You get credits for books that you send to others, and in turn use those credits to request books for yourself. You can also buy extra credits for a very small fee. The books are all yours once you get them, you do not have to send them back or regift them unless you want to.
To get your free book you do not have to be a member of PaperBackSwap, I will just insert your address in the “send to” area. Though if you want to join it is completely free, and addictive! Then when I choose the winner that person will just let me know their mailing address and what book they want. You will have to search through and se what books are posted and ready to be mailed, but I will let the winner take up to three weeks to make sure they get the book they really want.
Sound simple enough? Read my posts every day from the 12th to the 18th. Leae lots of comments on your favorite children’s books. On the 19th one lucky comment will win a free book from PBS.

I loved Yertle the Turtle, by Dr. Seuss. It’s my favorite Seuss book.
I also really enjoyed the Great Brain series, by Fitzgerald, and All of A Kind Family. (Chapter books) I can’t wait until mine are old enough to read them!
Lois Lowry was also a favorite for juvenile lit.

I have credits at PBS, but I’m waiting to collect all my stuff for next year’s curriculum. It’s kil - ling - ME!
My favorite we have done so far has got to be Old Yeller. It’s such a GREAT read aloud, and just perfect for cuddling up on the couch. It has it all - sad, happy, educational bits from the time period.

Anything by Dr.Seuss goes over well. My favorite is Green Eggs and Ham and The Cat in the Hat.
Another one we all love is “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch.

Happy Children’s Book Week!
One option to celebrate this week is with a green children’s book.
Eco-Libris blog brings today a recommendation on The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle (written by Stefani Newman of teensygreen). It’s a great conversation starter about nature, the seasons, and helps kids open their eyes to the world outside.
You are welcome to read it at:

Oh, what a great idea for a prize! I love it! I’ve checked out PBS, but haven’t had time or books to give away to really experiment with it.
As far as favorite Children’s books, I have a few also.
I think my favorite of all time is Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Right now, my 2 and 5 year old are both enjoying having the Winnie the Pooh series read aloud to them. And, my favorite recent discovery is SkippyJon Jones. I forget who the author is and don’t have the book handy. I can’t wait to hear what books are on your list.

My daughter has discovered my copy of Heidi that my grandmother gave me; she also loves the volume of Grimms Fairy Tales that I was given as a child. There is something magical about reliving a story I loved as a child through my children. I can’t wait for them to be old enough for The Phantom Tollbooth.

Lloyd Alexander’s The Black Cauldron from the series The Prydain Chronicles. I adored this series as a kid, it was like The Hobbit books but so much less ‘heady’ so it really appealed to me. Disney made an animated version of The Black Cauldron in the 80’s. I don’t think that I ever read all of the Lord of the Rings books - they made my head swim!
