Rikki Tikki Tavi
Another day, another great book that I want to share. Remember to leave lots of comments letting me know your favorite books!
Today’s book is Rikki Tikki Tavi. It is actually a short story by Rudyard Kipling that was part of The Jungle Books
. When I was a little girl I was given a huge book of children’s stories. Rikki Tikki Tavi was one of my favorite stories tuck in the anthology. I devoured it.
Rikki Tikki Tavi was a mongoose who was found, half drowned, by a young boy. He was taken in by the family, cleaned and fed, and kept watch over the boy and his family from snakes. As well as running around the house being immensely curious about everything. In the story Rikki Tikki Tavi must face two large cobras who lived in the garden while the house was empty.
It is one of the more serious stories, with a heavy emphasis on death in the plotline. So there are some kids who will not be ready to read this. But it is still one of my childhood favorites.
What were some of your favorite childhood books? Is there one in particular that you still recall now as an adult?

My very favorite book as a young girl was The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I read it about 10 times. I even remember the day my dad bought it for me, it felt like the most special gift ever. I adored getting books as a child. My grandma sent me Little Women when I turned 7 and I inhaled it; I read it several times over as well.

Interesting that Lynn would choose that book…my mother named me after the main charecter of “A little princess” My mother loved books. She loved them so much she named me after her favorite charecter! I remember trying to read it together with her nightly…while we didn’t get very far at that point (it was too old for me at the time) I did finish it and enjoyed it dearly. One of my younger childhood books that I loved was “Jane and the Dragon” I do believe they have a cartoon about those charecters now.

Two of my favorite books in school were “Flowers for Algernon” and “The Monkey’s Paw” Or short stories…either way. I really enjoyed them then and will be sharing them with our children when they get old enough for that sort of thing.
Especially “The Monkey’s Paw.” Creepy.
