New Year, New Planner

by

writing in plannerEveryone has plans for the new year, but do you have someplace to write those plans down? Marye’s post on homeschool planners reminded me that I still don’t even have a 2008 calendar. Anyone who knows me isn’t shocked by that. Often it might go into May or June before I get annoyed enough to buy a simple calendar to hang in the kitchen. Though I’m finding that with each passing year I want to get more organized sooner and sooner. This year there is enough going on that I am really looking for a good personal planner.

I’ve mentioned before how important pre-planning can be. Sure, it might seem a little OCD, but it can also save you some frustration in the end. Or at least that’s my theory. Since I happen to be pretty bad at planning things out and sticking to them. I need a plan, I feel anxious and worried without a written list in front of me. Then I toss it aside half way through and get sidetracked into something else. Sadly that is a trait I think my sons have both inherited.

Now the question is what kind of planner do I need. Seperate ones for homeschooling, personal use, and family? Or a big one that combines them all. I kind of like this Polestar Family planner, though I have to admit that the pink flowers on the front make me cringe a little. If anyone is using a great planner please let me know! I need something big, but not bulky. And with lots of space to keep track of everything I have going on. And I would prefer one that goes from January to December. If only my poor printer hadn’t died, I could print myself off one exactly how I needed it.

I can’t do a planner b/c it freaks me out if I don’t keep up with my ‘plans’. Instead, I looked at all the different things we were using and figured out how many times a week we’d have to do them in order to finish them by the end of the school year. Some things, like our History program, will spill into the summer no matter what I do. Other things, I only need to cover 3x/week in order to finish them.

For me, I am going to start carrying a calendar in my pocketbook. We keep our calendars on the computers (Cozi, which syncs up our two home computers as well as my husband’s at work) which has been working out amazingly well, but I need to have the schedules on me when we leave the house so I can make appts.

I don’t use a planner for the same reason as FOM - they just stress me out.

I do use my cell phone as one, though. If you have a Google calendar going you can send appointments and reminders to yourself via SMS and set it up so that Google sends you an SMS on days when you’ve got events scheduled. They don’t have to be complicated, either. Something like “3 months: change oil & start Spring unit study” will work.

I email reminders to myself via SMS all the time, too.
