Lessons Learned…

by

You know, if you play Santa too early….like shortly after midnight…and then you go to bed and shut your bedroom door as usual…you might learn a hard lesson…….

Yes, that lesson would be that our children woke up sometime before 3 AM, opened every gift under the tree, then shortly after that, they flung open our bedroom door yelling, "LOOK WHAT SANTA BROUGHT!"

And, so, we arose from our bed to see what was the matter….hahaha bad joke there but we did get out of bed only to find……….they truly had already enjoyed their Christmas delight.

So, we shushed everyone back to bed, disappointed that we had missed the opening of Santa’s surprises……however, Walker was very unhappy with having to sleep alone, so Wayne got in bed with him.  When I woke up at 8:30, there was no one in bed with me.  I figured I better get up and check it out.

It’s a good thing I did because Wayne was sleeping in Walker’s bed and Walker and Jace were in the living room playing with their stash of Santa gifts while we, the horrible parents were sleeping nicely.

So, we sat them down in front of me, Wayne handed them one gift at a time (that had already been opened obviously) and I made a picture for keepsake.  Of course, I doubt very seriously I ever forget the Christmas that our children opened gifts without us.

Hindsight, I do remember telling Wayne last year that we should make the boys sleep with us (which we had just managed to get them out of our bed a few weeks before that) so that they didn’t get up and open gifts without us.  This year, it never occurred to us that we should put them in our bed.  Again this year we had just managed to get them sleeping in their own bed a couple of months ago and we didn’t even think of putting them in bed with us just in case they woke up.

Oh well, you live in and learn.  Do you think when they are 15 and 16 we will still have to have them sleep with us so they don’t get up and open Santa gifts without us?
