Hot Cocoa Treats

It’s getting colder and colder. I was not made for cold weather at all, anything below 75 F has me running for the long sleeves and thick socks. I’m a wimp, it’s OK.

So, since I’m sitting here shivering while everyone else in my house feels “just fine” I’m going to share my favorite cold weather treat. This is what I make for myself to drink when it’s too cold to do anything more than snuggle under the blankets with a good book. The drink itself isn’t that extraordinary, just a simple mug of hot cocoa. It’s what I put into the mug that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

peppermint sticksFirst I pull out some of my special peppermint sticks. If I’m out of sticks, or if I’m making this for my kids and want something easier for them to handle I use candy canes. The curve at the top makes a perfect handle. Next I need some chocolate. I know, there’s plenty of chocolate in the hot cocoa, right? I say you can never have enough chocolate. Melt the chocolate down and dip the peppermint sticks into it. Get them coated all the way around, a nice thick layer. Then lay them on a sheet of wax paper to dry. For extra fun my kids like it if I add sprinkles or stick a marshmallow on the end. I use the sticks to stir my cocoa then just let them sit in the mug, melting goodness into each drink. They usually last through 2 or 3 drinks, or I just munch what’s left after I finish my cup.

If you’re feeling generous you can always wrap a stack up in plastic wrap and give them as part of a gift basket. Put them together with a package of hot cocoa mix, a nice mug, and maybe some cookies. I know I’d love to get that as a present.

We’re completely opposites on weather, because I can’t stand anything over 75 so the only thing that gets me through our Midwestern summers is the promise of 5 months of perfectly lovely, chilly temps.

Btw, add a shot of peppermint schnapps to that cocoa sometime. Yum!

Yummy! Can’t wait to try this…I invested in a bright red teapot this past year. It makes the cocoa taste even better, I think:-)
    Have a happy Wednesday!

I love those!! I tried adding peppermint schnapps to hot cocoa cuz I totally thought it would be like adding a candy cane plus a buzz!! No good. Some like it…no I.
