Homeschool Resolutions

by

2008The new year is almost upon us. Do you have any homeschooling resolutions for the new year? Now is a great time to evaluate what you have been doing and think about whether or not it really works for you and your family. Make a list of what is working and what isn’t, of what you and your kids want more of and less of, and what you want to get rid of completely.

Maybe it’s time to add more outdoor time to your homeschooling, or spend more time reading, cut out the TV, or toss the prepacked curriculum out the window. Whatever you have been thinking about doing this is a great time to put those thoughts into action. Ask your kids to create their own education resolutions. What subjects do they want to tackle and what do they want to ignore? What do they wish could happen more during the day? Just because they write it all out does not mean that you have to follow it, but it does open the door to communication and compromise.

Here are some of the things we plan to do more this year:

  • Take more walks, even if the weather isn’t the best
  • Learn more about dinosaurs
  • Read less brand-name character books (like Clifford, Thomas, etc…)
  • Do a ton more arts and crafts
  • Go to bed at a better hour (well rested kids learn better)
  • Live even more green

If anyone else has a list of homeschooling resolutions share it here! I’d love to read what others are planning for the new year. And if you don’t have a list yet, get on it! It doesn’t have to be much, but having a plan for the new year can make it feel much smoother and make you more relaxed.

I also want to live more ‘green’ this year and get outside more often in the winter months.

Just before the holidays, we started a new type of schedule. I’ve set aside a couple of hours in the morning for ’school’ stuff. I’ve also created a chart that lists how many times a week I want us to cover math, reading, writing, history, etc. I let my daughter decide which subjects she feels like doing on any given day, but the rule is we have to meet my (minimal) requirements each week. She seems to like this, and I like it too b/c there has been a lot less whining and things go much more smoothly. I hope we can continue this going into ‘08.

I have resolved to not make any more homeschool resolutions. It’s the only resolution I know I can keep.

I don’t believe in resolutions but I do believe in setting goals and this is the perfect time to that. So our goals for the new year is more relaxed unit studies, it seems to work better for us, having a topic to tackle and then completing it and moving on. I’m going to incorporate this into math as well instead of a workbook style. For example we are doing a Geometry unit study starting in January. I think my mantra for the new year is “Less is More”. I really enjoy the questions you ask and reading others responses inspires me. Thak you!

I am so happy to find your blog! We have just made the decision (finally) to homeschool our eldest, age 9. He was in danger of falling through the cracks despite his and our persistent hard work. He has a brother in kindergarten and a 3 year old sister, who, if I can actually do this, will likely follow suit.
It’s a relief to find another resource!
