Homeschool Controversy That Isn’t About Homeschooling!
I mentioned the other day about the Homeschool Blog Awards taking nominations. Anyone who was involved last year probably remembers the controversy that came up. Well as this year’s awards gets into gear the controversy is back.
I hesitate getting into it. I can see both sides of the issue. One hand those who host the awards gets to make the rules. On the other some of the rules are a matter of personal perception. It’s never as black and white as we want it to be. For instance some may feel that “darn” oversteps the no foul language rule, others feel that you have to try much, much harder than that to break the curse line. No photographic nudity is another rule. But where that line sits varies greatly. If I post a photo of myself breastfeeding my son some people will see it as a sweet family photo, others will see it as pornographic. Who decides where that line sits?
Dana has a much better post discussing this at her blog. And while you are there jump back a post to visit the Carnival of Homeschooling that she is hosting as well. Doc has some great thoughts on the controversy as well. Though, I’ll warn those who are a bit… sensitive that you might not want to click over.
Well, I’ve said darn and talked about breasts. So just in case I’m not disqualified let me leave you with some nudity.

That’s FUNNY.
I was subtly pandering for votes on my site the other day. I figured if half of my six readers nominated me, I’d be in like Flynn. Now you tell me I have to get rid of the naked cat photos…
There goes fame and fortune.
Darn, that’s funny.

I’m am so thrilled and honored that you would nominate me … but yeah … I guess I’ll have to focus on the “Southern Baptist pastor’s wife” instead of the the boobs, vagina’s, penis’s and balls!
Ha! I just sure jacked up your site traffic right there!!!!

Well, I think your blog should easily qualify or I would definitely question the intent of the awards people. : ) Or I missed those posts.

I’ve got some blog posts on the subject too. I don’t think the real issue should be that the HBA people shouldn’t change the rules but rather that they should understand that changing the rules changes the audience and that should be reflected in how they present their awards. Can you be an inclusive award if you’re excluding people?

I actually have a blog post up about this subject as well. It’s just semi-hidden cause I’m still a chicken to get involved in the controversy.
I was a “part” of them last year (I did the site and set up the voting) but I had issues then as well. I’m not involved this year. I’m glad about that.
