Grade by Grade Basics - Anyone
Ok, so I’ve been perusing other sites, not just magazines and my own child’s school folder. And, I’ve found some pretty interesting stuff. Let’s start with Kindergarten, mmmkay? I mean, sounds like a great place to start to me……
Kindergarteners are eager, filled with energy and have a difficult time sitting still. They seek out friends and do what the teacher says simply as a way to gain approval They grow in their ability to listen to directions and follow them eventually.
What will kindergarteners typically learn? I think this is very wide spread when you talk specifics, but in the broad spectrum, I looked at a few courses of study and most have the same objectives. Those objectives read like learning to read, write and compute as well as cut, paste, skip and share. They will learn how to dictate and to write stories, adding and subtracting using counters. You can also count on the ideas surrounding plants, planets and parts of the human body.
There will also be plenty of time for learning social and emotional skills and hopefully your child will learn that making mistakes are a natural part of learning and will build self-confidence as well.
One of Walker’s best friends was the kind of kid who had no interest at all in learning. He was all about play and having a good time. His mother teaches special education at the school and she would tell his preschool teachers (he was at our center but moved when she went on maternity leave) that it didn’t matter to her if he knew his sounds, she wanted him to learn to get along with the other children. He was on Walker’s t-ball team too and they had a blast together. They are in different rooms now but he seems to be doing well so apparently his mom was right on with her thoughts.
And, most definitely, look for kindergarten to have gone high tech on us all since we were in kindergarten ourselves. Or, since there was no kindergarten…yea, I’m that old…
