Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
Sometimes we just want a silly book to make us giggle. It is one of the best things about books. You can toss reality out the window and indulge in some hilarious fun. So when we’re in need of silly giggles I pull Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barret off the shelf. The title alone gets my oldest grinning from ear to ear, even on those cranky days when it seems nothing will do.
Could you imagine living in a world where it rained meatballs? Or where it snowed mashed potatos? It is almost too weird to imagine! But that is half the fun, getting to imagine the truly odd for a while. Where else are you going to get to eat what the weather brings in? The artwork is colorful and funny, it blnds in perfectly with the feel of the story. Even when the weather gets bad the illustrations keep it lively. Sure being squashed by a giant pancake is no laughing matter, but how could you not giggle just a little?
That is why Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is our choice for books that makes us laugh, even on the bad days. It is just too fun and cute to pass by. Tell me what children’s books you pick up when you need a good laugh? What books do your kids migate towards when they are feling silly? Children’s Book Week ends on the 18th and I will have a winner posted on the 19th!

That sounds like a good book! I have to read horse books here for the younger 2. nothing funny, but it helps the good and bad days. I’m hoping to get the complete series before to long. It’s called the Billy Blaze series.

This is one of pour all time favorites. The illustrations got me drawing when I was a child and I would spend all day pouring over them. It has the same affect on my kids.

We love that book. Somehow it never gets old.
When my youngest was shorter, he loved *I’m A Little Mouse* by Noelle & David Carter. It’s not really a funny book, but he would crack up. (Might have had something to do with his insane mother and her animal voices.)

This is a great one, and so is the sequel, Pickles to Pittsburgh. But our hands down family favorite is Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, by Eugene Trivizas, with illustrations by the incomparable Helen Oxenbury. I will have to do a post on this book.

My boys (age 6 and 4) love this book too! Another book that sends them into fits is “I Stink” by Kate McMullen. Being typical boys, they love it when the garbage truck goes through his alphabet recipe of trash - and talk about icky stuff like dog poo and dirty diapers!!

I cannot think of a single funny book that our family loves to read. I guess we don’t often get in silly moods. Most books will actually get us smiling if read with the right funny voices for different characters though.
