Choose Healthy Foods With the Rainbow

by

I was reading about the cupcake bans going on in some schools in New York and was suddenly ovrcome with the urge to bake cupcakes. Why? Because as a homeschooling family I don’t have to worry about my kids getting prepackaged, mass cooked foods from a school cafeteria. I remember school nachos, and I still have nightmares. And because I know I’m feeding my kids healthy food everyday I don’t have to worry about them getting the ocassional cupcake.

When I was still pregnant with my second son I took a free nutrition course that the local co-op was giving, and I learned a useful trick for making sur that my kids are eating healthy. Not only is it a useful trick, it’s also pretty darn fun too. You just use a rainbow.

fruits and veggiesHere’s how it works. Choose a fruit or veggie from each color group each day. You’ll be getting the suggested 5 a day and making sur that they are a healthy variaty. You can even have your kids help. Give them construction paper and let them put different foods into the color groups where they belong.

Here’s an example: tomatoes in the red, bananas in the yellows/orange, cucumbers in the greens, eggplant in the purple/blues, and onions in the whites. It is a simple way to help with colors and sorting for younger kids as well as teach nutrition to older ones. And it’s always fun to see what color patterns you can create each day.

What a neat idea for the littlies.

Thanks! I had been telling my daughter that eating food with “different colors” was good, but I hadn’t thought about the rainbow idea. She’ll love it!

That is a super idea! Just yesterday we were standing in the produce aisle checking out all of the different colors. It would have been even more fun to have been looking for a rainbow!

I LOVE this idea! Thanks for the tip!
