Celebrity Homeschool Gossip

by

Will SmithI’m not usually into celeb gossip but I really like Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. I liked them even more when I found out they were homeschooling. Not just for the typical “we’re rich and travel everywhere” reasons that most celebs do but because they’ve actually looked into educational choices and options.

In 2005, Jada Pinkett Smith told Essence that the decision to home-school was based partly on the family’s extensive travel schedule – but also on dissatisfaction with the other options.

“The school system in this country – public and private – is designed for the industrial age,” she said. “We’re in a technological age. We don’t want our kids to memorize. We want them to learn.”

Tammy posted that now it seems Will Smith is starting a school. Him and a handful of other homeschooling families are coming together to teach their children.

There’s just very powerful educational concepts that we believe in, and we feel like ‘I want to design the system that revolutionizes public education.

I’m very interested to see what this means. A homeschool co-op type school, a small private school, or something else all together. Perhaps a religious based school, since rumors are he either is or is not a scientoligist. Well known Scientoligist Tom Cruise is supposed to have his oldest two children homschooled by his two sisters.

Thanks to Tim Tebow homeschooled celebs are getting some spotlight time right. There are quite a few famous people who were homeschooled, Venus & Serena Williams for instance.

I found the article in RD where Will Smith talks about homeschooling- it’s http://www.rd.com/content/will-smith-interview/

He and Jada don’t actually do the teaching- they have hired teachers to come in and teach what *they* want the children to be taught.

This is so cool. My daughter has a bigtime crush on Will Smith–this will make her like him even more since she’s been homeschooled. :-)

He sure sounds like a very interesting person. He seems to have it together, which is a change from most of the messed up celebs.
