Answers on Finding Balance

by Summer Minor

balanceYesterday’s big question was on balance in the home with homeschooling. It seems to be something that many homeschoolers have trouble with. When a parent is home all day there is often the idea that they will clean the house, run errands, and do the many things that are needed to care for the home. But when you throw homeschooling into the mix it can be difficult. Especially when each of your children need different things. How does one stay on top of the home and on top of their children’s education?

For me it means making choices of what I am going to do. What is going to be more important: a clean house or a happy child? I am not saying that I allow the house to fall to ruin, but I make choices about what needs to get done and what does not. And if the house does not look like the cover of Better Homes and Gardens we’ll live with it. I have talked before on cleaning and cooking while homeschooling, but Lori D gave a great response that I wanted to share.

I have always done all housework in the morning before we start any “school” at noon. I’m thankful that both my son and I are not morning people and I can’t “do school” if I’m surrounded by stuff I think I need to do. So by getting it done it helps me focus. Now I have a 4 year old who is raring to do school as soon as he wakes up in the morning so there have been some “adjustments” on our parts to accommodate his needs…

Angela also gave a great tip that I think is important for all parents, not just homeschoolers, to think about.

I remember something our doctor told me when I was fretting that my fussy toddlers were not eating balanced meals. He reminded me that with kids it is sometimes best to strive for a balanced day, or even balanced week.
I apply that same concept to our lives.

The rest of her comment is also worth checking out.

Does anyone else have any great advice on how to find balance in homeschooling? I would love to hear it! Leave a comment on Finding Balance in Homeschooling.
