Anarchy In The Home School
Well, they’ve found us out. It’s true, we’re all just a bunch of anarchists.
Dana shared that the California Chapter of the National Education Association declared parents who did not send their kids to school were creating “educational anarchy.” Anarchy? Really?
Well, you know home schooling is so punk rock. All that anti-authority, sticking your finger up to “the man”, and refusing to conform. You’ve got some pretty good street cred already. And it’s no secret there is a connection between punk rock an anarchy. But does that mean I’m an educational anarchist? Let’s look at the evidence.
Hey ho, let’s go….
First to examine is the Rock ‘n’ Roll Preschool shirt, a spoof from the infamous Rock ‘n’ Roll High School movie of the Ramones. If you’re looking for an example of educational anarchy you don’t have to look much further. This shirt is almost a family heirloom around here, one that has been worn by both of the boys when they could.
Next up, rockin’ the ‘hawk. That’s right, I’m the mom who let’s her kids get the weird hair cuts that makes the other moms at the park mad because they know their kids are going to bug them about doing the same for weeks. What can I say, I’m rebelling.
OK seriously, does choosing not to send your kids to a public or private school really equal anarchy? Other than the slightly less roll of the government in the home I just don’t buy it. We’re not breaking into lawlessness and disorder and I doubt anyone else is either. But it makes for a nice sound bite.
anarchy, educational anarchy, homeschooling

You must conform! Without everyone conforming to norms there will be chaos!
And it will be BORING.

Summer, you put the “Educational Anarchist” logo on a t-shirt, and I’m buying it. No kidding.
And, if causing anarchy means we cause the public school system to reflect on what they are doing and possibly change their system, them I’m all for that!
Gotta go. It’s time for me to teach the kids how to slam dance and crowd surf.

We’ve rocked the ‘hawk too while homeschooling. Nice article.

We have anarchy at our house. But I don’t think it has anything to do with homeschooling. It’s just the way we are.
Perhaps the public schools should reflect on why they need to have metal detectors in the schools. Could it be an indication on an undercurrent of (gasp!) anarchy?!

Funny. I am pretty sure there isn’t anarchy here, but I am too busy ignoring my kids to know for sure. You know, because all they ever do is play video games and watch television. Isn’t that why I homeschool?
Thanks for visiting my blog. Yours is fun.

Hi.As one of the source articles for the theory that homeschooling is punk rock, I’d like to add my two cents. Yup, I need that logo for a t-shirt! And also, I think homeschooling can have any kind of value attached to it based more on where the individual homeschooler is coming from. To me, homeschooling is a rejection of institutions as a replacement for life. To others it is a relief from prejudice or a way to connect to religious values. For still others it is mainly all about providing an education. Although I am sure that education is forefront in all of our minds! It’s cool if not everyone sees homeschooling as a return to Do-It_Yourself life.It would be so dull if everyone felt that way. But I think it is a tremendous shot in the arm to know that a person can make their own fashions,be in their own band even if its not top 40, educate themselves, grown their own food and learn about the world by doing. That to me is the essence of punk and of homeschooling. The anarchy part is just something we all have to live with no matter how or why we homeschool!
